OUR WHY
One person on the streets is too many, but there are an estimated 400-500 rough sleepers just within 3km of the Sky Tower.
This doesn't include thousands more, some on waiting lists for housing around the city, or sleeping in cars at night.
CURRENT PROJECT
Whare O Te Manawa Ora / House of Hope in Manukau will be a day center open 6am-10pm where the local people struggling with homelessness have a safe, restorative environment to connect to needed resources, and even more importantly, to reconnect them to themselves, their whānau, and community.
WHAT CAN I DO?
Our Whare is not yet open (we are working on it!) but in the meantime there are plenty of ways you can support those who are homeless in our community.
Many organizations working in sustainable development use the “its better to teach a man to fish” illustration. We want to take it one step deeper: we want to help a man restore his mana, identity, & self worth, so that he can then learn how to cook a fish, buy a fish, sell a fish, grow a fish, or whatever he chooses to put his mind to.
A word from our Founder, Heather Pennycook:
" The key is in re-creating whānau & community, restoring people's mana, dignity and self-worth. This may be a huge vision, but it is a huge problem! We will only solve it by looking at the big picture and implementing a big solution that involves the community and agencies working together."
